Find your suitable course

The workshop ‘The Writing Process: From Brainstorming to Proofreading’ addresses the different stages of the academic writing process from coming up with an idea to the moment of submission. The aim is to break down the writing process into smaller, manageable tasks and develop various tools that help you generate, structure and express ideas.

The workshop ‘Negotiating Academic Discourse: Style, Clarity and Writing as a Form of Conversation’ focuses on the conventions of academic writing that are necessary to produce coherent, concise and clear texts. It looks at various strategies to implement both at the paragraph and sentence level, and discusses issues of coherence and cohesion in the text as a whole. The aim is to become familiar with the characteristics of academic writing, find one’s own scholarly voice and improve clarity and accuracy.

The workshops are complementary, but depending on your interests and needs can also be taken individually. You can choose between an intensive weekend course and a weekly course (2 hours/week). You can thus either cover a lot of ground within just two or three days, or familiarise yourself with the same material at a slower pace.

All courses take place at Rienößlgasse 3 (U1 Taubstummengasse, U1,U2 and U4 Karlsplatz, Tram 1 and 62 Paulanergasse).

If you are not sure which course would be more suitable for you or need more information, do not hesitate to contact me.

I am currently on maternal leave and not offering academic writing courses.

Courses will be relaunched in summer 2019.
In the meantime please feel free to sign up for my newsletter to stay up-to-date and receive notifications.

The courses are highly interactive and require a continuous engagement from all participants. To make sure that you benefit from your learning experience, you will be asked to think about a topic of interest within your field, so that you can continuously apply what you are learning to your own writing practice. You will receive more information and instructions prior to the course.

What you should NOT expect:
  • Having your academic paper or thesis written or proofread for you by someone else. Please note that this is not an essay writing service.
  • Abstract theories and concepts
  • Sitting through long explanations delivered by the instructor
  • Closely following a textbook on academic writing
What you CAN expect:
  • A 'toolkit' that helps you develop your writing skills. Your work will not be done for you, but it will become easier and more straightforward!
  • A hands-on, pragmatic approach
  • A friendly, supportive environment
  • Lots of interaction and feedback
